Too Much Whitening will Harm a Smile

Smile CoupleWhite smiles never go out of style. From way back in history to the present day, cosmetic efforts to achieve and maintain the brightest smiles possible remain universal. Patients who turn to their dentists for help to reverse discoloration caused by smoking, wine, coffee and/or time tend to have better results. While whitening options for teeth have come a long way, cosmetic dental procedures such as bleaching should never become an obsession.

Realistic Glamour

With “awards season” here, you’ll notice many white smiles on the red carpet. It’s only natural that if you see you favorite celebrity strutting their stuff with a grin that could light up all of Hollywood, you may want to emulate that trend. Yellowing and stains on teeth are inevitable with age. So when you whiten your smile, the procedure will take years off of your appearance, and give you an inner confidence encouraging you to smile bigger and brighter. Still, you must remain realistic. Films are shot through filters, and photo shoots are almost always retouched. Don’t set out to attain and maintain impossibly white teeth year round, or damage is likely.

Too Much of a Good Thing

If you whiten too often, your results might end up being the complete opposite of what you’re going for. If teeth become so white that they are almost translucent, they will appear grey. Whitening with certain products can cause temporary sensitivity in teeth, but if you continue to whiten more often then you need to, further sensitivity and even long term damage can occur from prolonged exposure to bleaching chemicals. The amount of whitening you put your teeth through is important, but you should also seek the best product available. It’s always a good idea to consult your dentist when considering exposing your teeth to whitening, to be sure that the product you are choosing isn’t known to have adverse side effects.
