Veggies, Cheese, and Seltzer to Keep Teeth White

Holiday PartyJust because Christmas is over doesn’t mean the holiday parties are going to stop. There’s still New Year’s Eve to contend with, after all. And what better night than the one before a new year rolls around to celebrate with a nice glass of red wine. Unfortunately, those tannins that give your favorite red it’s rich color will do the same thing to your teeth. If you have recently whitened your teeth, you’ll probably feel especially obliged to avoid tooth stains. However, if you stick to a few simple tips, you can have your red wine and enjoy your bright smile, too.

Three Easy Tips for Avoiding Red Wine Teeth

Cheese, Please – Most parties that include a steady flow of wine will likely have snacks to go along with your beverages. One of the best accompaniments to wine is cheese. This is actually a good thing, because the calcium in cheese coats your teeth so tannins have a harder time sticking to your smile. This can prevent those instantaneous purple/red stains which are often seen with regular red wine drinkers.

Don’t Forget the Fiber: Crackers may be the usual companion for cheese, but any refined carbohydrates will convert to sugar in your mouth. Raw veggies are a better carb of choice with your dairy because they are fibrous, making them a natural tooth cleanser. All of the chewing you have to do to break down cruciferous veggies is good for salivary production as well. The more saliva, the less plaque. The less plaque, the less stains.

Seltzer: The bubbles from sipping on a little seltzer can help to remove red wine stains. Swishing the fizzy beverage around in your mouth between your sips of wine can actually make wine stains disappear before your eyes.
