The Difference Between Metal And Composite Fillings

engelberg fillingsIn the past, treating a cavity meant you would be receiving a metal filling. While amalgam restorations could prevent further decay, they were also very obvious and didn’t blend with the smile. Fortunately, we can now provide a more lifelike restoration to protect your teeth from cavities. What are the differences between metal and composite fillings?

When Do You Need One?

We recommend a filling to address tooth decay. The first indicators of decay typically include tooth sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures, or possibly a toothache that doesn’t subside after 48 hours. Never ignore pain in your teeth, see your dentist right away for a diagnosis. If you undergo routine checkups and cleanings, the doctor can often identify the presence of decay before you experience discomfort. You should see your dentist once every six months for routine exams.

Metal Fillings

Amalgam fillings are made from metal. They require the removal of decay, as well as some portions of the tooth structure. The metal material is applied to the tooth. These restorations are silver in appearance and may not be suitable for young children, seniors, or pregnant women. They are also unsuitable for those with metal allergies. They have been known to expand over time, cracking teeth and increasing the risk of further decay or infection.

Composite Resin

Composite resin can be shaded to blend with the surrounding teeth. The material doesn’t expand with time and is appropriate for patients of all ages. Placement takes just one visit and they don’t require the removal of a much tooth structure. With a restoration you can avoid the risk of decay turning into infection or a dental abscess.
