Root Canal Procedures Save on Cosmetic Dental Work

Older Man Brushing TeethIf you have gotten to a point where your dentist is recommending a root canal procedure, most likely you have a cavity that has gone ignored. Early tooth decay can be fixed with a filling because it only affects tooth enamel. Once a cavity has infiltrated your tooth’s dentin, the nerves can easily be affected next. When this happens, you will probably begin to feel some discomfort, sensitivity, and even pain. If you continue to ignore the infection at this point, it will work its way into the roots of your teeth. You may need a special procedure that can save your smile from aesthetically displeasing decay.

The Roots

Root canals are very small passageways inside your teeth. Starting at the crowns of teeth, the root canals branch down to the tip of the roots. Each tooth has one to four roots located in the pulp. In addition to the roots, pulp is comprised of blood vessels, nerves and other tissues. When roots are exposed to bacteria because of poor dental health, the infection can spread quickly and result in an unpleasant abscessed tooth. Quick action is required to keep from needing the entire tooth extracted.

Root Canal Procedures

A root canal procedure is an interim between decay and abscess, to save your tooth from full extraction. Root canal treatment stops infection and restores full function to decaying tooth and roots. First, diseased tissue is removed. The area is cleaned and disinfected. A qualified dentist or endodontist can reshape the root canals, filling the area with infection preventing medicine. Next, a temporary filling or crown is placed over the area where the tissues have been removed. This will protect the pulp area during the time that you await your next appointment. A custom-made crown will be ordered, and once fabricated, the dentist will affix it into place at your next scheduled appointment.
