How Do You Prevent Cavities?

engelbergpreventionWithout treatment, something seemingly minor as a cavity can soon progress into an infection or abscess, threatening the stability of the tooth. But is there a way to prevent cavities from even developing? With a preventive approach to dental care, you can limit your risk of tooth decay.

What Causes Tooth Decay?

Our teeth are composed of three distinct layers: the enamel, dentin, and pulp. The enamel is a protective layer, protecting the dentin from harmful bacteria. The inner pulp keeps the tooth alive and healthy, acting as a nerve center. When the enamel becomes compromised, whether through injury or poor oral hygiene, a cavity forms in the dentin. Without treatment, the decay continues to spread until reaching the pulp, where an infection can form.

When Should I See A Doctor?

Be aware of any discomfort in and around your teeth. Tooth sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures or toothaches that don’t subside may very well be a warning sign of decay. Your dentist can examine you to see if you need treatment.

How Do I Help Prevent Them?

How do you reduce the risk of developing cavities in the first place? There are a few precautions you can take, such as:

  • Brushing your teeth twice a day, at least two minutes per session
  • Flossing every night before going to bed, reaching each side of every tooth
  • Drinking water instead of energy drinks, soda, or sports drinks
  • Reducing consumption of snacks high in sugar and other starches
  • Having the doctor examine and clean your teeth twice a year

By taking the above steps you improve your oral health and limit the risk of tooth decay forming. If you have any questions about preventing cavities then please contact our team today.
