Fillings Placed Too High?

Jaw Pain GirlFor a dentist, providing you with a filling is a multi-step process which requires precision and attention to detail. Though your job is mostly just to sit still and keep your mouth open, it is not lost on empathetic dental professionals that you are out of control and in a scary situation which might be extremely unpleasant for you. If you’ve had a recent filling, you may have noticed that your dentist asked you to bite down on a piece of paper. This may have been accompanied by questions on the feeling of placement, specifically if your filling felt too high. However, if you’re still numb from local anesthetic, you may find this high filling question difficult to answer. If you end up thinking things are fine when they’re not, you could end up with pain from a high filling after the numbness wears off.

Discomfort from High Fillings

The reason that a high filling might hurt is that it puts stress on your periodontal ligament. The ensuing inflammation causes discomfort and tenderness, or may even feel painful enough that you are on the phone requesting an emergency appointment with your dentist. Feeling pain at the site of your new filling is likely to cause understandable concern for you. One of the biggest expressions of worry from patients with high fillings is that they will have to get the filling done all over again? Luckily, there is a swift solution to high filling discomfort. Going into your dentist to get the filling ground down to the right level is all you need to do, and should only take a few minutes.

Identifying a High Filling

Once you’ve exited your dental office and the local anesthetic has dissipated, a little discomfort at the site of your filling is possible. However, if you feel actual pain, or any type of notable discomfort which lasts for days, it’s likely that you have a high filling. If you feel a misalignment when you bite down or any sense that your filling isn’t quite right, don’t hesitate to contact your dentist. Once the high filling is corrected, your periodontal ligament could need a couple of weeks to heal up completely, but you’ll notice the soreness lessens each day.
