Entertaining and Interesting Dental Trivia

Facts 1There’s nothing trivial about taking care of your dental health. Brushing your teeth twice-a-day, flossing daily, and keeping up with your biannual (six month) checkups are all surefire ways to keep teeth healthy. But dental hygiene doesn’t always have to be work. To kick your week off with the right vibe, try your hand at some tooth-based trivia.

Tooth Trivia

Q1. Can you name any celebrities who have sported braces after achieving their public status?

A1. Comedy legends Carol Burnett and Jack Klugman both utilized their fame and fortune to go after the smiles they had always wanted. Singing divas Cher and Diana Ross wore post-fame braces as well. However, some celebrities feel that their teeth are their trademark. Elton John, Madonna, and Anna Paquin all refuse to alter their diastemas (gaps between their front teeth). Steve Buscemi believes that he wouldn’t receive as many roles if he straightened his crooked grin.

Q2. Does anyone really avoid terrible dental injuries by wearing athletic mouthguards while playing high contact sports?

A2. They sure do. In fact, approximately 200,000 people save their smiles from tragedy every year by taking this one little precaution. You can think of mouthguards being to your teeth as helmets are to motorcycle riders.

Q3.  Where did water fluoridation start?

A3. The very first city in the United States to infuse tap water supplies with fluoride was Grand Rapids, Michigan. Fluoridation of city water became common around WWII. Subsequently, cavity rates lessened dramatically. For years, people thought that fluoride made your strong tooth enamel even stronger. Recent research has discovered that fluoride actually acts as a sort of non-stick spray for your teeth. Bacteria can’t cling to teeth as well when they are regularly exposed to fluoride. So if your city water supply is fluoridated and safe to drink, get yourself a glass and say cheers to healthy teeth.
