Are You Brushing And Flossing Correctly?

engelbergbrushflossBrushing and flossing seems like a no-brainer, right? However, you may be surprised to learn how many people aren’t taking proper care of their teeth. Even if you pickup your toothbrush and floss every night before bed, using them incorrectly can still leave your smile vulnerable to decay or gingivitis. Are you brushing and flossing correctly?

Choosing the Right Tools

When looking for a toothbrush, select one with soft bristles. If you brush too vigorously with hard bristles you may end up damaging the outer enamel. With floss, you can choose a pick (excellent for younger patients and people just starting to floss regularly) or tape. When used properly, either option can thoroughly clean between the teeth. As for toothpaste, we recommend a non-abrasive option with the ADA seal-of-approval on the packaging. Whitening toothpastes tend to be abrasive and can actually weaken the enamel over time. Remember, both children and adults should thoroughly clean their teeth daily.

Brushing Your Teeth

You should brush your teeth twice a day, when you wake up and again before you go to sleep. We recommend brushing the front at a 45-degree angle to the gums. You should also reach the top of the teeth and the back. You can reach the backside of the teeth by holding the brush vertical and brushing up and down. Don’t forget your tongue! By cleaning your tongue you can remove bacteria and help freshen your breath.

Flossing

When using tape, place the floss between the teeth and up to the gums. Then pull it into a C shape against the tooth, moving up and down to tooth. Do this for every tooth. When you floss, you remove bacteria and food articles from between the teeth, which a toothbrush won’t be able to reach. You should do this every night before going to bed.
