British Whitening Study
The research study called upon 2,000 British citizens to estimate the age of models in photographs they were shown. There were pictures of the same model with a bright, white smile, and then with yellow, dull, stained teeth. The photo with the white teeth was estimated to be 13 years younger, with an average guess of 31-years-old. With the stained teeth, the average estimate of age was 44. According to head researcher of the study, Dr. Phil Stemmer, teeth and smiles are the first thing people notice about someone else’s appearance. “A person who goes around with uncared-for teeth will smile less and will in any case create a poorer impression. Unconsciously you receive a number of more negative signals on the person in question, his or her lifestyle, character, relationship status and career.”
