Answer: A cavity can be the result of poor oral hygiene or injury weakening the protective layer of tooth enamel, allowing bacteria to bypass it. Patients often report tooth sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures or a persistent toothache that doesn’t subside. If you have an aching tooth that lasts for more than 48 hours, then you should schedule a visit with your dentist for a diagnosis.
Question: What is the filling made of?
Answer: We don’t use amalgam (metal). Instead, we use a metal-free material known as composite resin. This material is strong and can blend with the tooth.
Question: How do you place one?
Answer: If we find a cavity, we can treat the problem in a single visit with a dental filling. We first remove any decay from tooth before we gently etch the tooth. We then apply the composite resin, which can be shaded to blend with the tooth. As the composite resin cures under a special light, the dentist will mold the tooth and sculpt it. Finally, the tooth is polished to help ensure a more lifelike appearance.
Question: What steps can I take to avoid decay?
Answer: You can cut back on foods and drinks high in sugar and other starches. You can also make time every six months for a routine dental cleaning, which removes all plaque form the teeth and helps prevent cavities from forming.
