Tell your Teeth to Stop Being so Sensitive

Sensitive ice creamDid you know that every single day of a calendar year celebrates something different? Tomorrow is National Frozen Yogurt day. If you suffer from sensitive teeth, eating anything cold or frozen may seem like torture. Teeth whitening is a common cosmetic dental procedure, but the treatment has been known to evoke sensitivity in the smiles of some patients. Deerfield cosmetic dentist, Dr. Brent Engelberg, can answer your questions as to why sensitivity and teeth whitening sometimes go hand-in-hand, and how the issue is preventable.

Never Whiten without the Green Light

Teeth sensitivity occurs due to a variety of reasons. A good dentist will examine your teeth before any procedures are implemented. It’s important that your teeth and gums are healthy and free of infection. People who whiten their teeth when they have severe gum disease or cavities which are untreated stand to have a greater risk for sensitivity from exposure to bleaching chemicals. If gums are receding or tooth enamel is highly damaged, the protection of your roots and nerves below the gumline is compromised.

Never Skip a Step

Dr. Engelberg offers several different whitening treatments, but all will begin with a thorough cleaning and examination. Before we expose your mouth to bleaching gel, your lips and gums are covered for protection. Hydrogen peroxide is a bleaching gel which will offer you dramatic whitening in a short time. We activate the gel with a special laser light. Once the process is finished, we will remove bleach from your teeth. Next, we apply a fluoride treatment which remineralizes your tooth enamel. This means your chances of any significant or long term tooth sensitivity from whitening are very low. By following these steps with every case, our patients leave the office with white, bright smiles and strong, healthy teeth.
