I Have A Cavity, What Now?

Nearly all of us will develop a cavity at some point. After all, only between 1% and 2% of the nation is immune to dental caries. For the rest of us, cavities can mean discomfort and serious complications unless we seek treatment. If you have a cavity, what do we do? With a dental filling, we can restore your smile to full function and health!

Frequently Asked Questions About Treating Cavities

Question: What causes a cavity?

Answer: A cavity forms when the enamel coating your teeth becomes damaged or weakened, which allows bacteria to bypass the protective layer and reach the inner pulp. At this point, tooth decay forms. Factors behind cavities can include chipped or cracked teeth and poor oral hygiene.

Question: When should I see a dentist?

Answer: Often, the earliest indicator of decay is tooth sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures. Patients may also notice a persistent toothache that doesn’t subside after 48 hours. If you experience either of these potential symptoms we urge you to see your dentist right away.

Question: Will you recommend a filling?

Answer: In most cases, yes! A dental filling is a one-visit solution to cavities, addressing the problem and protecting the tooth from further problems, such as dental infection.

Question: What does placing one involve?

Answer: We will first need to remove any decay from the tooth. We will then clean the tooth and gently etch the surface (which allows the filling material to better bond prior to curing). We then shade and apply a metal-free composite resin. We then shape the material as it cures under a light. Finally, we polish the tooth for a more lifelike appearance. In one visit, we can provide a natural looking solution to tooth decay.
