Getting to Know your Teeth a Little Bit Better

Flossing GirlYou are probably very familiar with the way your own smile looks. But do you really know your teeth? Highland Park cosmetic dentist, Dr. Brent A. Engelberg, has seen a great many teeth in his career, and loves educating patients on how a smile works. Without this knowledge, we wouldn’t be able to provide patients with the kind of quality cosmetic dental work that we do.

Anatomy of a Tooth

Teeth are comprised of three basic elements:

  • Dental Pulp
  • Dentin
  • Enamel

Dentin is the bulk of your teeth as you know them. The hard structure that makes the color of your teeth is covered by translucent enamel. The hardest substance in your body, enamel has the job of providing a hard protective shell over each tooth. Dental pulp below your gumline houses nerves and roots that nourish and anchor your teeth. In terms of cosmetic dentistry, the crown of your tooth and your gum tissues are the most likely to be dealt with in aesthetic procedures.

Color Matching in Cosmetic Dentistry

While the combination of tooth enamel over dentin results in a color range from white and yellow to a greyish hue of white, teeth can dull, stain, or yellow as you age. Dr. Engelberg is very interested in the color of your teeth. As an experienced cosmetic dentist, he understands how important color-matching materials and creating a realistic look is in cosmetic dental work. White fillings, crowns, dental bonding, and porcelain veneers can all be dyed to match your surrounding teeth perfectly. Dental bonding is a potential fix to broken, chipped, partially decayed, oddly shaped, or severely discolored teeth. Composite material can be sculpted to cover over flaws perfectly. Next, the material is exposed to a UV light or laser which hardens the material to a very tooth-like strength.
