What Happens When We Need A Root Canal?

For decay, we place a filling. For a broke or cracked tooth, we place a crown. But what’s our solution for a dental infection or abscess? In these situations, patients need a root canal to avoid losing the tooth and to stop the uncomfortable symptoms. What happens when we perform one of these restorative procedures?

Diagnosing the Problem

How do you know if you need to see a dentist? The warning signs of a potential infection often include discomfort. For example, you may notice a persistent toothache that doesn’t subside after 48 hours. You may also encounter pain when biting down or chewing, a fever, swelling near the tooth, or even a bad tasting discharge from the tooth. If one or more of these warning signs seems familiar, then contact your dentist for a diagnosis. If the doctor uncovers any signs of trouble, he will recommend treatment.

Removing Infected Tissue with a Root Canal

First, the doctor will administer a local anesthetic to ensure the procedure is comfortable. For patients with anxiety, we can also discuss sedation. The doctor then opens the tooth and removes the infected tissue. From there, the doctor will clean the interior of the tooth and the root canals. After cleaning, we place a restorative material known as gutta percha inside the tooth.

Restoration

Th final step is restoration. We place a custom-made dental crown over the entire tooth, protecting it from further decay or infection. The restoration is created and placed in the same visit using CEREC technology. Your tooth will look completely natural and blend with the rest of your smile.
