Invisalign FAQs Answered by Your Northwest Chicago Dentist

Invisalign CloseWe have come a long way in the world of orthodontics. There are now appliances referred to as “cosmetic braces.” Traditional bracket and wire braces can be made with materials that are clear or blend in with your teeth, making them much less conspicuous. Even more amazing is that teeth can potentially be straightened by clear plastic liners that are nearly invisible to the naked eye. Professionals and self-conscious teenagers alike tend to have many questions about Invisalign. Your Northwest Chicago dentist, Dr. Brent Engelberg, will answer some of the most frequently asked questions regarding this attractive orthodontic option.

Frequently Asked Questions About Invisalign

Q1. I had braces as a kid, but my teeth shifted because I didn’t wear my retainer. Will I be a good candidate for Invisalign?

A1. You may not have understood why your parents wanted to “torture” you by making you wear braces as a child. Once you dealt with those cumbersome metal food collectors and could smile with a set of straight teeth, then they wanted you to wear a retainer at night for years on end. Forget it!

If you are one of the many people that neglected your orthodontic aftercare as a youth, you may have found that unfortunately your teeth have noticeably shifted over the years. It’s hard to guarantee if you will be a good Invisalign candidate until your Northwest Chicago dentist examines you, but we have certainly fit many former braces wearers with Invisalign.

Q2. Can I eat while wearing Invisalign?

A2. We recommend that you take your aligners out when you eat and brush your teeth. People find this to be another huge advantage of this treatment over traditional bracket and wire braces.

Q3. How long will I have to wear Invisalign?

A3. Just as with traditional braces, everyone is different. Some people will only need to wear the aligners for a few months, and some may go closer to two years. Either way, you will change to a new set of custom-made aligners every two weeks or so. You will also visit Dr. Engelberg periodically to make sure everything is on track with your teeth straightening endeavors.
