How Do I Fight Tooth Decay?

Last week we took a look at gum disease, highlighting the ways in which the disease forms and what preventive measures you can take. We would like to do the same thing for tooth decay today. How do you fight tooth decay? What steps can you take in your daily life to safeguard your smile against cavities?

Frequently Asked Questions About Fighting Tooth Decay

Question: How does a cavity form?

Answer: Our teeth are coated in a protective layer of enamel, which places a barrier between bacteria and the sensitive inner layers of dentin. However, should poor oral hygiene or injury weaken the enamel, bacteria can reach the dentin and cause a cavity to form.

Question: Will brushing and flossing help?

Answer: Yes! When you brush and floss your teeth, you remove food particles stuck on or between the teeth. Otherwise, bacteria could break down the particles to coat the teeth in plaque, eventually weakening tooth enamel to allow decay to form. Brushing and flossing also limits the amount of plaque adhering to the teeth in between dental cleanings.

Question: Why do we need cleanings every six months?

Answer: Six months is, on average, how long cavities take to form. Attending routine visits and cleanings can allow the doctor to identify and treat decay, often before it causes discomfort. A cleaning is the only way to completely remove plaque and tartar (calcified plaque) from the teeth.

Question: When should I see a dentist?

Answer: If in between your six month visits you notice your teeth feel sensitive or a toothache develops, then contact your dentist. These could be possible indicators of a cavity. We can then pinpoint the cause of your discomfort and if necessary, place a lifelike dental filling to address a cavity.
