How Do I Avoid Bad Breath?

Do you have bad breath? If you do, don’t worry, you’re not alone. Many people in the United States struggle with this embarrassing issue. We understand how this can impact your social life and how important addressing the problem can be. Fortunately, we also understand the factors that cause the problem and can offer tips on stopping bad breath.

What Causes Halitosis?

Multiple factors can lead to halitosis. For example, if you don’t brush and floss your teeth as recommended, then food particles can remain trapped between teeth or on the tongue. As the food decays and as bacteria break down the particles, a terrible odor can form (along with an increased risk of cavities and gingivitis). In addition, certain foods, such as onions and garlic, can spread odor throughout the body. We will examine your smile and ask you questions to figure out the cause of your issue and recommend the most appropriate treatments.

Can My Daily Habits Help Address the Problem?

Yes! First, you can cut back on foods with powerful odors, such as onions and garlic. You can also cut back on drinks that promote dry mouth, another factor behind bad breath. For example, too much coffee and soda can lead to dry mouth.

You should also be brushing your teeth twice a day, once in the morning and again at night. You should also brush your tongue as well. Even more important: Don’t forget to floss every night before going to bed to remove the food particles your toothbrush cannot.

Should I See My Dentist?

If making changes to your daily habits does little to address the problem, then yes, give us a call. We can perform a through dental cleaning to remove plaque. We can also examine your smile to make sure your breath problems aren’t related to an oral health concern, such as thrush or an undiagnosed infection.
