Does Your Tooth Need A Partial Crown?

For cases of decay, we often recommend placing a tooth-colored filling. For more severe damage or advanced decay, we may place a lifelike dental crown (which we can create and place in one visit). However, occasionally we encounter damage or decay that doesn’t require a full crown and that a filling isn’t substantial enough to address. For these cases, we may recommend a partial crown, also known as an inlay or onlay.

Dental Inlays

An inlay fits on top of your tooth in between the cusps. Made from porcelain, the restoration is strong and can be color-matched to blend with the tooth. We can use this to correct advanced tooth decay or repair minor damage to the tooth.

Dental Onlays

An onlay also sits on top of the tooth, fitting over the cusps. Likewise, this one is also created using porcelain. In addition to durability and lifelike qualities, the material used to create an inlay or onlay is also stain-resistant.

Creating and Placing Your Restoration

We begin by removing any decay and thoroughly cleaning the tooth. We will also prepare the tooth, removing a small amount of structure to make room for the restoration. We then use an intraoral camera to take detailed images of the tooth, which we use to create a digital impression and then design the inlay or onlay.

CEREC technology allows us to then mill the restoration from a solid block of porcelain. We can make any adjustments and then place the completed restoration with a powerful bonding agent. You won’t require a temporary to wear between visits. If you have any questions about our inlays and onlays, or about our crowns or fillings, then please contact our office today.
